Sports Star backs the Doncaster World Cup bid

A top class, former rugby player and coach is backing Doncaster’s bid to bring World Cup 2013 action to South Yorkshire.

Ellery Hanley, former England, St Helens and Doncaster head coach has pledged his allegiance to the Keepmoat Stadium’s bid to bring world class rugby to the town – this follows the backing from the Mayor of Doncaster just weeks ago.

Doncaster is hoping to attract a team to use the town as its base as well as bringing games to the stadium.

South Yorkshire Businesses and Residents can now join them, by logging on to a recently launched website: www.backthedoncasterbid.co.uk and signing up to help boost the campaign.

Ellery Hanley said: “South Yorkshire folk need to get behind the community stadium and ‘Back the Bid’, it’s a top class venue and sports fans who visit are given a great experience time after time. It would prove to be a fantastic asset for the tournament organisers if the Keepmoat Stadium’s impressive facilities are utilised.”

Shane Chalmers, chief executive of the Stadium Management Company explains: “Having Ellery on board with our campaign to bring World Cup action to the Keepmoat Stadium is fantastic, but we need Yorkshire residents behind us to be in with a chance of being amongst the venues given the honour of hosting a world cup match.”
The 2013 Rugby League World Cup will be the fourteenth staging of the tournament. It will be held in the United Kingdom and hosted by England and Wales. New Zealand are the defending champions having defeated Australia in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final.
