A rugby game at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on March 13th will raise funds for the families of miners killed in the New Zealand Pike River Mine tragedy.
The match, officially sponsored by UK Coal between Doncaster RLFC (The Dons) and the South Wales Scorpions, will mark the South Yorkshire club’s first league game of the 2011 season.
The Pike River Miners’ Relief Fund Trust was established following the tragedy on November 19th last year, when 29 miners lost their lives following a string of explosions.
Among them were 24 New Zealanders, two Australians, two Britons and a South African.
Tickets for the rugby game (3pm kick off) will cost £12 for adults, £10 concessions and £2 for under 16’s, with £2 of each adult ticket being donated to the worthwhile cause.
New Zealander Carl Hall, chief executive of The Dons said: “This is the least we can do to help the relatives who lost loved ones. It was a great tragedy which has touched people right across the world.
“The Trust is doing such a brilliant job helping the families come to terms with what has happened and also in supporting them financially in their day to day lives – we really wanted to help.”
Shane Chalmers, chief executive of the Stadium Management Company said: “It is a fantastic gesture from Carl and all his staff at The Dons. With Doncaster being a mining town and mining being an important industry in Wales, it seemed the perfect opportunity to raise money for the Trust.
“We urge rugby fans right across the UK to watch the match and help the families across New Zealand, Australia and South Africa as well as a little closer to home.”
