The team behind Doncaster’s Rugby World Cup ambition are hoping that the RFL will give their bid a try!
A group, made up of the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster Dons, Doncaster Council and Doncaster Tourism have been working closely with business leaders and sports teams across the borough to get their support for the bid to bring World Cup Rugby to Doncaster in 2013.
The bid document which outlines how Doncaster could successfully host a World Cup Team and games for the 2013 tournament was handed in on the 15th April.
Shane Chalmers said: “Bringing World Cup Rugby to Doncaster would be a huge coup for the town. We know that we have fantastic facilities and big sporting events bring a fantastic boost to the local economy.
“The stadium is a superb venue and sports fans who visit us are given a great experience. Winning the Match Day Experience Award at the Stadium Business Award’s was a great testament to what we are capable of.”
The 2013 Rugby League World Cup will be the fourteenth staging of the Rugby League World Cup. The tournament will be held in the United Kingdom and hosted by England and Wales. New Zealand are the defending champions having defeated Australia in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final.
Chris Dungworth, Invest in Doncaster said: “We have worked really hard over the last few weeks to raise the profile of our Rugby World Cup bid and a great deal of partnership work has taken place to get us to this stage.
“We have been delighted by the response from businesses and sporting clubs backing Doncaster’s bid to be in with a chance of becoming a host city.”
Colin Joy, from Doncaster Tourism Office, said: “Becoming a host town for a large event like this will have a real positive impact on Doncaster. The tournament will attract many visitors to the town and will no doubt mirror the buzz created in the borough around St Leger time.
